James P. Gueits focuses his practice on commercial litigation and has a broad range of general transactional experience with a primary focus in the areas of real estate and business. Mr. Gueits has handled a number of real estate litigation matters and has assisted developers in acquiring, financing and structuring industrial, retail and residential developments. Mr. Gueits appeared before the appellate courts of the state during the representation of a local developer victimized by a real estate investment fraud in the Country of Nicaragua.
Mr. Gueits has represented local banking institutions and other providers of commercial credit throughout the documentation and closing of revolving and term loan facilities, including working capital lines of credit, financing of foreign receivables and other asset based loans. Mr. Gueits has also counseled clients with business matters before municipal and state governments and has petitioned government agencies to procure subsidies to finance construction projects tied to job creation and other forms of economic development.
Mr. Gueits is actively engaged in the South Florida community serving on behalf of several local initiatives. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Doral Business Council, the economic development entity in the City of Doral. Gueits was a previous member of the Miami-Dade Mortgage Fraud Taskforce and participated on its Regulatory and Business Practices committees. Mr. Gueits is also a member of the Board of Directors of DFYIT, a drug prevention program founded by Marlene Josefsberg to educate school-aged children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. DFYIT now has 70 active programs in public schools across Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Mr. Gueits has been a trustee member of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and is a current member of the Cuban American and Coral Gables Bar Associations.
Mr. Gueits previously served the Honorable Judge Federico A. Moreno as a judicial intern at the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He also interned for the Honorable Peter R. Lopez of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida in the general jurisdiction division.
Mr. Gueits received his Juris Doctor cum laude from St. Thomas University School of Law where he was the Moot Court Board President and an Articles Editor for the Law Review. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Miami. He is admitted to practice law in the State of Florida and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Mr. Gueits is a Miami native and is fluent in Spanish.
